Sahar Baassiri
About Sahar Baassiri is a writer, who served as Lebanon's Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO from 2018 to 2023 after a long career in journalism. Joining An-Nahar Newspaper in 1981, Baassiri held various positions over nearly three decades, among them becoming its Foreign Editor. She also became known for her 15 year-front-page columns on current affairs focusing on regional issues and politics in Lebanon. A selection of her articles was later published in two books. Transitioning into diplomacy, Baassiri’s tenure at UNESCO, was marked by efforts aimed at safeguarding cultural heritage, empowering women and girls, reforming education and advocating for freedom of expression. Her work reflects a deep commitment to fostering sustainability placing culture and education at the core of development policies. Educated at Columbia University and the American University of Beirut, Baassiri also taught Journalism at the Lebanese American University.
